A down-the-hole hammer is a type of drilling equipment widely used in mining, construction, and geological exploration. It uses compressed air to drive a piston to impact the drill bit, achieving efficient rock breaking. Proper operation of a down-the-hole hammer not only improves work efficiency, but also extends equipment life and ensures safe operation.
Preparation for Operation

First, inspect all components of the hammer, including the piston, drill bit, and seals, to ensure they are free of wear or looseness. When connecting the hammer to the drill pipe, ensure the connections are clean and the threads are tight to prevent air leaks or loosening. Also, check that the air compressor supply pressure meets the equipment requirements (usually 0.5-0.7 MPa) and that the air supply line is unobstructed.

Starting and Operation

To start, turn on the air compressor. Once the air pressure stabilizes, slowly lower the hammer to the bottom of the drill hole. During operation, maintain a steady thrust and avoid sudden pressure or lifting to prevent damage to internal components. If the drill bit is stuck or encounters unusual resistance, stop drilling immediately and check for blockage or rock hardness exceeding the equipment's tolerances.

Shutdown and Maintenance

After operation, shut down the air compressor and allow any remaining air in the hammer to escape before disassembling. Regularly clean the hammer to remove dust and debris, inspect seals for wear, and replace if necessary. During long-term storage, apply anti-rust oil and store in a dry environment to prevent cylinder rust.

Safety Precautions

Operators must wear goggles and earplugs to avoid exposure to high-pressure airflow and noise. Never adjust the drill rod or touch rotating parts while the hammer is operating to prevent accidents.

Adhering to these operating procedures will ensure stable and efficient operation of the down-the-hole hammer, reduce equipment failure rates, and improve overall operation safety.
