Regular Inspections:

Examine each 4 DTH bit before and after every drilling shift. Look for cracked or broken buttons, excessive wear on the gauge area, damaged threads, or signs of overheating (blue discoloration). Check for proper nozzle function and blockages in air passages. Document findings and retire worn bits promptly to avoid downhole failures.

Keep Them Clean:

After use, thoroughly clean bits with high-pressure water or air to remove drilling mud, fines, and debris. Pay special attention to the flute channels and nozzle orifices. Trapped cuttings can harden and restrict airflow, leading to poor performance in the next operation. Avoid using corrosive cleaners that may damage the steel matrix or carbide inserts.

Proper Storage:

Store DTH bits in a dry, organized rack with protective thread caps installed. Avoid stacking or dropping bits, which can damage buttons or shanks. Keep them away from moisture and chemicals to prevent rust and corrosion, especially on threaded connections.

Lubrication (for Threaded Connections):

Apply manufacturer-recommended thread grease to shank threads before each connection. This reduces galling, prevents corrosion, and ensures smooth disassembly. Do not over-grease, as excess can attract dirt and impair sealing.

Correct Handling and Make-Up:

Always use proper tightening torque when connecting the bit to the hammer. Under-torquing can lead to loosening and damage; over-torquing may strip threads. Use alignment guides to avoid cross-threading during assembly.
